CIRCUS UTOPIA
an international, intercultural art exchange
Circus Utopia is an admittedly utopian art project to foster international and intercultural communication and understanding.
In the face of overwhelming global tension it seems time to teach our children that the world is not exclusively defined by nationality, religion and socioeconomic boundaries, but rather that all humans inhabit this earth together, are responsible for it, and that the earth will stay inhabitable only if we recognize each other as human and as entitled to live under dignified conditions. All children have a right to grow up in a safe environment, to be loved and taught about life. “Circus Utopia” emphasizes that our children still understand the universal language of art as a medium to talk about being in the world and the joy to be alive.
Therefore Circus Utopia invites children (and their grown-ups) worldwide to participate in an international art exchange. To be part of the Circus children send a picture message about their world to other children and their families.
The children will choose the theme of their painting on their own. The art work shall be painted with acrylic paints on canvas flags that can be easily rolled up or folded and then mailed. These flags, in the tradition of traveling circus announcements and the canvas circus tent, can be hung outside to weather and thereby symbolize the change that all human work is subject to. They are meant to carry the words “Circus Utopia” ONE WORLD - to communicate our universal desire for a world without borders in which all children can thrive in peace. The choice of canvas as a medium points to the nomadic aspect of the tent as a place to come together and find magic when the time seems right and without consideration for perfection.
Circus Utopia travels and performs since January 2007. So far there are about 20 medium to large scale paintings to form a background for the young artist’s exchange. Several paintings have made their way to Europe so far. The Circus Utopia paintings, house paint on heavy canvas drop cloth, have been exposed to snow, sun, wind and rain. The weather has made them frail and beautiful at the same time.
The project is open and may last from a few months to years. Please feel welcome to pass this invitation on to a friend – here or anywhere in the universe.
Peace, laughter and freedom to all of you!
